If you feel attracted towards the purchase of one of those “promissing” department store telescopes, think twice! Usually they are low quality instruments, even if their brand is a recognized one. These scopes feature large and brightly colored printed boxes with false claims like “400x”, “600x”, etc. This is totally misleading and, if you see any telescope that advertises in the box its “augment”, you should look elsewhere inmediatly. Another deception are full color pictures of galaxies, deep sky objects, ect., since you will never see them that way. To get those kind of color views you will need sophisticated astronomy photo equipment. So, for starters…avoid being lured. You will throw away your money. Do a web research; there are specialized stores and also very serious and respectable online stores. Join an astro club, inquire, go to an star party and you will find plenty of good advice.
